Project Storybook

Posted in Design, Project Storybook on April 15, 2008 by binz85

The last lecture was on typography and visual design. This lesson taught us on proper usage of text and fonts, size and readability, and also the importance of layout and grids, which can enhance or deterioriate the presentation of work, depending on whether they are properly used or not. Last but not least, is the design document, which comprises the above elements that I have said. The last project for the module was then released; create a storybook for kids aged 6-9. My group was formed on that day, my groupmates are Joanna, Mei Yuan, Erica and Syafiq.

We met up to brainstorm for ideas on the plot for storybook. Each of us contributed some ideas. Erica brought some books to show us too. Basically, we set some criteria for our book –
1)it has to have a moral so that kids can learn values out from it.
2)The setting is to be kept within forested area, as it seems to be more easier to draw and color, considering the flora and fauna.
3)The main character is an animal.
4)The most important thing is that the story should be interesting.

We decided to use a wolf as our main character. Why? Because the wolf has always been made a bad character in stories like The Red Riding Hood, The Three Little Pigs and The Boy Who Cried Wolf (well, considering that it harms the sheeps, haha). We decided to use the wolf and these stories and and play around. It was great that we have alot of ideas generated during our meet up, and I must say we were really having fun thinking about the storyline. We came out with the storyline soon enough, and this time around, the wolf is not a bad character anymore, or should I say, there are no bad characters in out story!

Here are some sketches Syafiq has drawn, and tracings done by me:

Mei Yuan and Erica did the colorings.. shall revealed it on my next post.. It was pretty rush for us as we wanted to present the book itself on the presentation day. So everything was done within 4-5 days. Anyhows, stay tuned for our story!

Assignment 6 – Posters evaluation

Posted in Assignment 6 on April 11, 2008 by binz85

At the end of lecture on Gelstalt principles, assignment 6 is released to us. We are to choose two posters that we can find from the websites, newspaper or anywhere else and evaluate them. One of them should be good, and the other, bad. Since this assignment can be done in groups of two, I did it with Joanna. Below are the posters that we have chosen.

Good:

Bad:

For the poster on Individuality, we find that this poster is good, as we observes that this poster contains many Gelstalt principles; proximity, parallism, similarity, and figure and background. Can you find out? Heh.. The poster is visually balance if you cut this poster into halves and it is in unity as well in terms of colours and size. Thus we concluded that it is a good poster.

As for the poster on Grindhouse, We found out it violates some of the Gelstalt principles; Figure and ground, proxmity and similarity. There are too many elements in the poster, thus the visual spaces seem to be crowded and the elements competing for attention. There is a weak unity with respect to shapes and types of fonts used, and the attention is not well controlled. Thus we concluded that it is a bad poster.

Do you guys agree with us? One interesting observation during the class presentation – most of the bad posters were from the old times(this was brought up by one of our tutorial mates). Seems that in old times, posters and advertisements were crowded with many elements so as to inform the people out there about their features.

Elaboration can be referred to our presentation on the evaluation of these two posters.
